Pelvic exams often include Pap smears and are done to screen for cancer, infections and STDs. pre-cancerous cells and lesions: When abnormal cells are discovered in lesions, they may indicate an increased likelihood of cervical cancer. radiation therapy: A cancer treatment technique that uses radiation to control the growth and spread of cancerous cells. sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): Diseases spread by sexual contact of any form, whether oral, vaginal or anal. squamous cell carcinoma: A form of cancer that develops in the outer layers of the skin as well as mucosal membranes. This is the predominant cause of cervical cancer. staging: A method used to measure how advanced or how quickly a cancer is spreading.
